Some medications cost more than any discount card can fix. When that happens, there are still places to turn. Here’s what exists, in plain English.
Help from the drug maker
Most companies that make expensive medications run a patient assistance program — they provide the drug free or at low cost if your income qualifies. These programs are real, they’re not advertised well, and they’re underused.

Proof of income, a prescription, and your doctor’s signature on a form.

Nonprofit assistance funds
Independent charities help pay out-of-pocket costs for specific conditions. Funds open and close as money runs out, so timing matters — if a fund is closed, check back.

Ask about a lower-cost version
Sometimes there’s a generic, or an older medication in the same family that works just as well and costs a fraction. Your doctor and your pharmacist can tell you. It’s worth the question.
